BEST SUBJECTS TO TEACH WITH A CLIL APPROACH
Hi teachers,
Have you wondered what is the best subject to teach with a CLIL approach? Yes? No? Well, I think that in fact there isn't a best subject to teach with a CLIL approach. Now you may think: "so... how can I decide in which subject to implement CLIL?
First, let me tell you why I think there isn't a best subject for CLIL. CLIL is a methodology and as methodology CLIL gives you the principles you must apply when planning a CLIL unit o project. Whatever the subject you are going to teach CLIL, you should plan carefully Content, Cognition, Communication and Culture. Even though, there isn't a best subject, in my opinion the main objective of applying CLIL is that our students are able to communicate in L2, therefore choosing a subject which can offer them situations in which our students can use the language for a communicative purpose should be a must.
Would you like to know why my school decided to teach Science with a CLIL approach? Great! Keep reading ;)
Science is a subject in which students use language for:
π Observing
π Making predictions
π Reporting results
π Explaining their conclusions
π Talking about all what they observe around them: atmospheric phenomena, animals, plants...
Moreover, if in your classes you are also using games or cooperative learning techniques, they also need the language to communicate. In fact, we should provide students with different opportunities to use the language with a meaninful purpose.
I know that there are also many teachers using CLIL in Arts&Crafts, Geography, Maths, Physical Education... So any subject is a window of opportunity to implement CLIL, as far as we keep in mind the CLIL principles. Finallly, I just would like to remind you that we learn languages listening, speaking, reading and writing so let's give our students time and activities in which they can use the language.
What are your thoughts? In which subjects are you implementing CLIL? I would love to read you ❤
