WHAT INVERTEBRATES LIVE AROUND US? (CLIL UNIT)

Image
Hello! Hello! Today I would like to share with you the CLIL unit  I prepared for my 10-11 year-old students during the third term. Kids love animals whether they are vertebrates or invertebrates, don't they? Since they had already studied the vertebrates in L1, their teachers and I agreed to deal with the INVERTEBRATES .  Invertebrate animals are more present in our lives than we  think; that's why I decided to entitled this unit: WHAT INVERTEBRATES LIVE AROUND US? As usual, I follow the steps described in the post " How I plan a CLIL unit or project ". These are the activities that I planned: 1) DIFFERENCES BETWEEN VERTEBRATES AND INVERTEBRATES.  I  created a presentation with several slides. In slide 1 there were two groups of animals: Group 1 (vertebrates) and Group 2 (invertebrates). The title of this slide was : " What are the differences between these two groups of animals?   Students could already identify the characteristics of vertebrates, ...

It is in English, so it is perfect for CLIL and English teachers.  How is KIDDLE designed specifically for kids? USING YOUTUBE VIDEOS IN YOUR CLIL SCIENCE CLASSES

Image
Good afternoon teachers! Have you realised it's just four weeks until the end of the school year? This countdown makes me feel stressed, but I had to share with you this tip my 6th graders shared with me two weeks ago. As you may have read in other posts, I use videos in my CLIL Science classes to clarify concepts, to introduce content... (you can also  read a post " Videos and Songs for your CLIL Science Lessons" ). This term my students are learning about "Invertebrate animals". I wanted them to search for their own information and I suggested them watching some videos I had found on Youtube. The content and the language were quite good for my students, but the character spoke too fast. When I arrived in class, I told them about the videos and explained them we were going to watch the videos several times because the character spoke too fast. Some of the students raised their hand and said: "Don't worry, Eva! You can slow down the playback speed"...

SPEAKING IN YOUR CLIL CLASSES: Experimenting and reporting results

Image
Hi teachers, How are you going? Some months ago I shared on my Instagram how my students do experiments and how they report results in our CLIL Science lessons.  Sometimes English and CLIL teachers complain because their students don't speak English in class. From my point of view, the most important issue we should take into account is that we offer students with motivating and meaningful situations, so that they are eager to use language. However, some of our students may not feel confident yet. In my case, my students are 10-11 year-old and they don't have a good command of English yet.  Here's when SCAFFOLDING should appear. Thanks to CLIL methodology , we can plan Language for Learning and Language of Learning in advance. This is a great opportunity to make sure our students have the language accessible to them. It is a good idea to have the structures and vocabulary they will need in a visible place, so that if a student needs to take a look at it, he/she can do...

KIDDLE: A SEARCH ENGINE FOR KIDS

Image
Good evening! How was your day? Mine was great, but now I am exhausted. However, I don't want to go to bed without sharing with this post. How many times have you asked your students to do an investigation and when they search for information on Intenet, the web pages they find are too difficult for them to understand? As you know, I teach Science in English and that happens most of the time. Some months ago I discovered KIDDLE . KIDDLE is a visual search engine for kids, offering safe kids webs, image and video search. It is in English, so it is perfect for CLIL and English teachers. Keep reading to find out how it works: 1. SAFE SEARCH . Sites appearing in KIDDLE search results satisfy family friendly requirements. 2. KIDS-ORIENTED RESULTS . KIDDLE returns the results in the following order: 3. BIG THUMBNAILS . Most KIDDLE results are illustrated with big thumbnails. Thumbnails serve as visual clue and are especifically beneficial to kids as they don't read as fast as ad...

VIDEOS AND SONGS FOR YOUR CLIL LESSONS

Image
Happy Monday! 💖   Videos and songs are always a wonderful resource for foreign language teaching. Why not using them in your CLIL classes? During all of my years of CLIL teaching I have been using songs and videos to support the contents I was teaching. Both videos and songs have helped clarify Science concepts. During all these years I have been saving them in USB external memories, but I must confess that from time to time I have been struggling to find songs or videos I knew I had, but I didn't know where to find them.  Then I came up with the idea of compiling them in a Google Sites . So, I created one Google Sites: " VIDEOS FOR YOUR CLIL SCIENCE LESSONS " and " S ONGS FOR YOUR CLIL SCIENCE LESSONS ". In both Sites I have classified them by the learning units I am teaching. Click on the photos below to have access to both compilations. If you have liked these two Sites, save the links because I will be uploading new videos and new songs which may be useful...

EDPUZZLE AND VIDEOS FOR YOUR CLIL UNITS

Image
It's already Wednesday and I would like to share with you this wonderful tool I have used during the lockdown and that I am going to use it  more next year for sure. Edpuzzle lets you edit interactive videos that they stop at the right place you have added a question or a note. Isn't it amazing? And it also records your students progress 😊 The first step is to register. Once you are signed up, you will have to choose your school and you may find out that other teachers of your school are already using Edpuzzle. If their videos are public, you will be able to see the videos they have edited. This app allows you to upload a video from one of the platforms they suggest (Edpuzzle, Khan Academy, National Geographic, ...) or you can upload a video you already have. The next step is to edit the video. As I said before, you can different types of questions: open-ended, multiple choice, notes... You can also cut out your video and make it shorter. Once your video is ready, it's tim...

CREATING WITH POWTOON

Image
Hi everyone, Today I would like to show you an activity I designed for my students at the beginning of the lockdown. The 2nd term had just been interrupted when my 5th grade students were about to finish the project of "Light". One of the last activities was to learn about the "Blue light" and its effects on our health. The final activity was to create a leaflet giving advice on how to take care of our eyes and health nowadays that we use so many devices.  After the first days spending so many hours in front of the laptop, I realised my eyes were suffering from being too much time working online or answering messages on the mobile phone... So I decided that I could create a presentation warning about the negative effectes of too much exposure to blue light. This presentation could be useful for both 5th graders who would be able to "finish" the project and to give advice to 4th and 6th graders. And there was Powtoon! I created the video below with Powtoon ...

My first Break Out Edu

BREAK OUT EDU During the lockdown I created my first Break Out Edu with  Genial.ly . My students loved it and I received lots of messages saying how much fun they had had with the Break Out Edu. Here you have the Break Out Edu entitled "The vaccine". My students had to discover where the vaccine was. They could revise concepts they had already learned at school. WELCOME TO "MY CLIL SCIENCE CORNER"

Image
Hi!  My name is  Eva and I have been part of the fascinating world of Education for 21 years (wow! Where has time gone?).     I have had the chance to teach and learn in different levels: from Infant School to 6th graders. I am a Primary School English teacher. I studied my Teaching Degree and my Pscychopedagogy Degree at the University of Girona.  My adventure in CLIL started in 2009, when I was given a paid leave by the Department of Education of Catalonia to receive training in CLIL at the University of Nottingham, where I learned from great teachers. In 2017, as head of studies, some teachers of my school and I engaged in an Innovative Project called "Generació Plurilingüe" (GEP) which aimed to introduce and implement CLIL in Catalan schools. I have also participated in eTwinning projects and I have received two National Quality Labels and two European Quality Labels. I am very curious and I am in constant training to keep developing professionall...
